What this looks like at your size
A machine bought from a configurator is specified by whoever wrote the configurator. That is fine for general office work and wrong for anything with a shape to it — a workstation that is bottlenecked on single-thread performance, a server sized on core count when the constraint is disk, a render box with cooling that throttles under the only load it will ever see.

In the order the work happens
The sequence matters more than the list. Most of what goes wrong on these jobs traces back to a step skipped early rather than to the work itself.

Specify from the workload backwards
What it will run, how much of it, and where that will bind first — cores, clock, memory, disk throughput, or GPU. A specification that does not name the bottleneck is a shopping list.

Build on the bench and burn it in
Assembled, tested, and run under sustained load before it goes anywhere. Infant mortality happens in the first days; it should happen while the machine is still with us rather than on your deadline.

What was chosen and why, what it will and will not do well, and what to upgrade first when it stops being enough.

Before you call
- Why not just buy from a major vendor?
- Often you should, and we will say so. This is worth it when the workload has a shape a configurator cannot express, or when you need several identical machines that will still be identical in two years.
