Toning and Tracing a Cable
The method for identifying an unlabelled run with a tone generator and an inductive probe, and the reasons it goes wrong: tone bleeding onto neighbouring pairs, a probe held at the wrong sensitivity, and toning a live pair when you should not be. Covers copper pairs, data runs, and what to do when the tone is everywhere and therefore useless.

Toner · one conductor
Clipped to tip with the second lead on ground, not across the pair. Across the pair the two conductors cancel and the tone barely radiates.
Probe · in the bundle
The tone couples capacitively into every cable lying against the toned one, so neighbours answer too. Turning sensitivity down is what separates them.
In a bundle every neighbour answers, and all of them sound convincing. This is the state people cut in — the probe is working perfectly and the answer is still wrong.

Confirm the pair is dead before you tone it
Tone injected onto a live line is audible to whoever is on the call, and on a data run it does nothing useful because the port is driving the pair harder than your generator is. Unplug at one end, or lift the pair at the block, before the generator goes on.
CautionNever tone a line feeding a fire panel, alarm dialer, or elevator phone. Lift it at the block only with the monitoring company notified, or find another way to identify it.
Clip to one conductor and ground the other lead
Tone on a single conductor with the return clipped to a good ground gives a far cleaner trace than tone across both conductors of a pair. Across a pair, the twist cancels most of the field the probe is trying to hear, and what leaks out couples straight into the neighbours.
Start the probe on low sensitivity
Turn the gain down until the tone is faint at the generator end, then walk the bundle. Everyone's instinct is maximum gain, and maximum gain is what makes forty cables sing at once. The right cable is the loudest one at the lowest gain that still hears anything.
Narrow by halves, not by hunting
Probe the middle of the bundle, split it, and probe each half. Three or four splits reduce two hundred cables to a handful faster than sweeping the whole bank hoping to spot a peak.
Confirm at the far end before you cut anything
Tone identifies a candidate. Continuity confirms it. Put a tester on both ends, or short the pair at one end and read it at the other, before anything gets punched down, relabelled, or removed.
CautionA tone that seems right and a continuity check that is not done is how the wrong run gets cut. The confirmation is the cheap step.
Label it now
The reason you are doing this is that somebody did not. Label both ends before you pack up, to whatever scheme the site uses, and note it in the handover document. Toning the same run twice is a self-inflicted cost.

Questions people actually ask
- Why is the tone on every cable in the bundle?
- Two usual causes. The probe gain is too high, so it is hearing the field from cables adjacent to the real one — turn it down until only the loudest survives. Or the tone is across both conductors of a twisted pair, where the twist cancels the intended field and the leakage couples into everything nearby. Move to one conductor with the return grounded.
- Can I tone a cable that is plugged into a switch?
- You can, but it rarely works. The port is driving the pair with far more signal than the generator, and many toners cannot compete. Unplug the run at the patch panel first — which also removes any chance of upsetting the port.
- Will toning damage anything?
- The tone itself will not. The risk is what you disconnect to apply it. Lifting a pair that turns out to feed a fire panel or an elevator phone is the real hazard, which is why the first step is establishing what the pair does rather than assuming it is spare.
- Do I need a toner if the cables are labelled?
- You need one to find out whether the labels are true. Labels in older buildings record what was intended at install. What was patched afterwards is a separate question, and usually a different answer. Toning a sample of a few before trusting a whole rack is cheap insurance.
