Choosing a tester

Testers, qualifiers and certifiers solve different problems at very different prices, and the expensive one is not always the right answer. This lays out what each tier measures, what it cannot tell you, when renting beats buying, and what a small field operation genuinely needs in the bag versus what it should hire for the week it is warranting a floor.

Three tiers,
and what each cannot do

Most people need the first two and rent the last one. The column that matters is not what an instrument measures — it is the question it cannot answer, because that is what tells you whether you need the next tier up.

  • Wire map tester

    The cheapest thing worth owning

    Confirms all eight conductors reach the right pins at the far end, and finds the faults that account for most of what goes wrong on site: a reversed pair, a split pair, an open, a short. With a remote unit it does this one-handed at the outlet.

    What it cannot tell you

    Say anything about performance. A link can map perfectly and still fail to carry gigabit, because wire map says nothing about crosstalk, loss, or length.

    What to look for
    • A remote end unit, ideally a numbered set so you can map a whole rack in one pass
    • Split-pair detection — cheap testers that only check continuity miss it entirely
    • Tone generation built in, so it is one instrument instead of two
    • Battery type you can actually buy at a hardware store
  • Tone generator and probe

    The cheapest thing worth owning

    Finds one cable in a bundle of two hundred. The single highest-value tool for working in buildings nobody documented, which is most of them.

    What it cannot tell you

    Confirm what it found. Tone identifies a candidate; a continuity check proves it. Toning without confirming is how the wrong run gets cut.

    What to look for
    • A probe with a real sensitivity control, not just on and off — gain is the whole technique
    • Multiple tone cadences, so two people can trace on the same bundle
    • Filtering, if you work near fluorescent lighting or lift motors
    • A generator that clips to a single conductor as well as a pair
  • Qualifier

    Middle tier

    Adds a judgement about whether a link will carry a given speed — useful when the question is 'will this existing run do gigabit' rather than 'did I install this correctly'.

    What it cannot tell you

    Produce anything a manufacturer warranty or a specification will accept. A qualifier's verdict is its own; it is not measured against a TIA or ISO limit line.

    What to look for
    • Explicit speed verdicts rather than a vague pass
    • PoE detection and load testing, which is increasingly the actual question
    • Switch port discovery, so you can see what the far end negotiated
  • Certifier

    Rent before you buy

    Measures the frequency-domain parameters — insertion loss, NEXT, PSNEXT, ACR-F, return loss, delay skew — against a standards limit line, and produces the per-drop report a warranty or a general contractor asks for.

    What it cannot tell you

    Justify itself for occasional use. It costs more than a used van, needs annual calibration to stay defensible, and sits idle between warranted jobs.

    What to look for
    • Current calibration, and the cost of the next one — an out-of-calibration certifier produces numbers that look identical and will not hold up
    • The standard you are being asked to certify against, and whether the unit still covers it
    • Permanent link and channel adapters for the category you actually install
    • Report export in a format the contractor will accept without you retyping it

Questions people actually ask
Do I need a certifier?
Only if somebody is asking for certified results — a manufacturer warranty, a specification that names TIA limits, or a general contractor requiring a report per drop. For diagnosis and everyday installs, a good wire map tester plus a toner covers most of the work. Certifiers are the tool you need on the day you need them and cannot substitute for.
Is it worth renting instead of buying?
For most small operations, yes. A current certifier costs more than a used van and needs annual calibration to keep its results defensible. Renting for the week of a warranted job puts a calibrated, current-standard instrument on site for a fraction of the price, and the rental cost is a line item on that job rather than a fixed overhead.
What does calibration have to do with it?
A certifier's results are only accepted while its calibration is current, usually annually. An out-of-calibration instrument produces numbers that look identical and are not defensible if the installation is ever disputed. Factor the calibration cost into any purchase decision — it is the part people forget.
What should be in the bag if I am not certifying?
A wire map tester with a remote, a tone generator and inductive probe, a punchdown tool with the right blade, a decent jacket stripper, and a butt set if you touch voice at all. That kit diagnoses the overwhelming majority of faults and costs a small fraction of a certifier.
Are cheap testers worth anything?
A cheap continuity tester genuinely does find the fault most of the time, because most faults are wire map faults — a reversed pair, a split, an open. What it cannot do is tell you a link will carry gigabit, or produce anything a warranty will accept. Know which question you are answering.
