Drive Health Reader
Paste smartctl output for a SATA disk or an NVMe drive and get a verdict rather than a table of numbers. Distinguishes reallocated sectors from pending ones, flags when a drive reports PASSED while actively failing, and tells you when CRC errors mean the cable rather than the disk.
Run smartctl -a /dev/sdX (or -a /dev/nvme0 for NVMe) and paste the whole thing. Parsed in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Method & assumptions
- A drive can report PASSED and still be failing. The self-assessment only trips on the manufacturer’s own thresholds, which are set so the drive stays inside warranty — not so your data stays intact.
- Reallocated sectors that are stable are survivable. Pending sectors are not — those are blocks the drive has found bad and has not managed to move yet.
- UDMA CRC errors happen on the interface between the drive and the controller. Replace the cable and try another port before condemning the disk.
- Rated endurance and spare capacity are the numbers that matter on SSDs and NVMe; sector counts matter on spinning disks.
- One clean report is a snapshot. Trend the counters — a number that is moving matters far more than its absolute value.
