Cable Management for Desks and Racks
How to dress cable under a desk, in a comms room, and in a rack, without creating something the next person cannot work on. Covers service loops, bend radius, hook-and-loop versus zip ties, why copper and fibre want different treatment, and the honest answer to whether fibre should be bundled at all.

Bending inside the minimum radius deforms the twist and changes impedance at exactly the point where every run converges. It passes a wire map — it fails on return loss, and only under load.

Decide the standard before the first cable
Which side power runs, which side data runs, how far patch cords travel, what a label says, and where the slack lives. Every rack on the site follows the same one. A rack dressed beautifully to its own private logic is still a rack the next person has to decode.
Leave a service loop, in the right place
Enough slack to move a device out and work on it, coiled where it does not obstruct anything, not a tight run that has to be cut to reseat a switch. The loop belongs at the fixed end — in the manager or the rear channel — rather than dangling behind the equipment it serves.
Use hook-and-loop, and do not pull it tight
Hook-and-loop over zip ties everywhere on data. A zip tie tightened by hand deforms the jacket and changes the geometry of the pairs inside, which shows up as a return loss or NEXT failure on a run that was fine before somebody tidied it. If a bundle keeps its shape when you let go, it is tight enough.
CautionA cable tie tensioning tool belongs on power, not on data. The pressure that makes a neat bundle is the pressure that fails certification.
Respect bend radius, especially at the back
Copper wants roughly four times its diameter under no load; fibre patch cords are typically ten to twenty times theirs and the manufacturer prints the number. The place bend radius gets violated is the last few inches where a cable turns into a port, which is exactly where nobody looks.
Separate power from data, and cross at right angles
Run them on opposite sides of the rack. Where they have to cross, cross them perpendicular rather than laying them parallel — parallel runs couple, and induced noise on a long parallel run is a fault that will not reproduce on a bench.
Label both ends, then photograph it
Both ends of everything, to the site scheme, before the doors close. Photograph the front and rear of each rack and put the images in the handover. The photograph is what tells the next person what it looked like when it was right.

Questions people actually ask
- Should fibre be bundled like copper?
- No, and this is the most common mistake made by people applying good copper habits. Fibre should be routed, supported, and protected — not compressed into tight bundles. Compression causes microbending, which shows up as attenuation that no visual inspection will explain. Use fibre-specific troughs, spools and radius guides, keep bundles loose, and never share a hook-and-loop strap with a copper bundle that will be cinched later.
- Zip ties or hook-and-loop?
- Hook-and-loop on anything carrying data. Zip ties are fine on power and on strain relief where nothing sensitive passes through, but on copper they deform the jacket and change pair geometry, and on fibre they are simply a bad idea. Hook-and-loop also survives the next change, which zip ties do not.
- How much slack should I leave?
- Enough to slide the device fully out on its rails and still work on it, and no more. Excessive slack is its own problem — coils behind equipment block airflow and hide labels. Put the loop in the vertical manager or rear channel where it can be seen and reached.
- Is cable management worth the time on a small install?
- It is worth more on a small install, because a small site has nobody on staff who knows the history. Ninety minutes of dressing and labelling on the day is the difference between a fifteen-minute fault and an afternoon of tracing on the day something breaks.
- What about airflow?
- Cable is the most common cause of a hot rack that has adequate cooling on paper. A mass of slack behind switches blocks exhaust, and a blanked-off gap left unblanked recirculates hot air to the front. Dress the rear so air can leave, and fit blanking panels in the empty units.
