Display mounting
How to hang a display on the wall you actually have — timber stud, metal stud, concrete, block, brick, plaster over lath, and the demountable partitions that will not hold anything. Covers finding structure before drilling, matching the anchor to the substrate, why metal stud is the one that catches people out, and how to set height so the screen is comfortable to look at.

Identify the wall before you identify the mount
Tap it, scan it, and look at the building. Timber stud, metal stud, solid masonry, concrete, plaster over lath, and demountable partition all take completely different fixings, and the surface tells you very little from the front. Drill one small exploratory hole in a spot the mount will cover if you are unsure — cheaper than the alternative.
CautionScan for power and pipework across the whole mount footprint, not just the four bracket holes. Then scan again at a different angle.

Treat metal stud as the one that will catch you out
A metal stud is light-gauge steel and will not hold a lag screw in any meaningful way. It needs a toggle rated for the load, a stud-and-plate arrangement, or — for anything heavy — timber blocking or a backer plate installed between the studs. A display fixed to bare metal stud with wood screws is a failure waiting for a warm afternoon.

Match the anchor to the substrate and honour its rating
Timber stud takes structural lag screws into the centre of the member. Concrete takes sleeve or wedge anchors set with a hammer drill to the specified depth and diameter. Hollow block takes toggles, not expansion anchors, because expanding against a thin shell breaks it. Plaster over lath supports very little; find the stud behind it. Every anchor has a published rating — apply a sensible safety factor rather than the number on the packet.
CautionAnchor ratings assume the correct hole diameter, depth, and no reuse. An oversized or re-drilled hole is not the anchor you specified.

Hit the centre of the member
Find both edges of a stud and mark the middle rather than aiming at the first thing the detector beeps at. A lag screw catching the edge of a stud holds a fraction of its rating, and it feels tight going in, which is precisely why it is dangerous.

Set the height for the seated eye, not the wall
In a meeting room the centre of the screen wants to be near seated eye level; in a standing or lobby space, higher. Mounted too high is the most common and most permanent mistake, and it is usually made because the installer was standing. Check the sight line from the chairs before drilling.

Get the cable path in before the screen goes on
Decide whether cable runs in-wall through rated pathway, in surface trunking, or down the back of furniture, and install it first. Fishing a cable behind a mounted display is far harder than doing it in the right order, and an in-wall run needs cable rated for the cavity it passes through.

Level, torque, and load-test before you walk away
Level the bracket across its full width, tighten to the specified torque rather than as hard as it will go, and put deliberate downward force on the mounted assembly before leaving. Over-tightening into a stud strips the hole; under-tightening leaves it loose. Both fail slowly.
- Can I mount a TV on plasterboard without hitting a stud?
- For a small, light screen with a heavy-duty toggle, sometimes. For anything of a normal office size, no. Plasterboard has almost no shear strength and the failure mode is the fixing pulling through the sheet, taking the display with it. Find the studs, or install blocking or a backer plate between them.
- How do I mount to metal studs?
- Not with wood screws. Use toggles rated for the load spanning the stud, a purpose-made metal-stud anchor, or — best for anything heavy — a plywood backer plate or steel blocking fixed across several studs to spread the load. Light-gauge steel simply does not hold a threaded fastener the way timber does.
- What height should a conference room display be?
- Centre of the screen roughly at seated eye level for a meeting room, which is lower than instinct suggests. Too high is the most common error, it causes neck strain over a long meeting, and it is effectively permanent once the holes are drilled. Sit in the chairs and check the sight line first.
- Which anchor for a concrete or block wall?
- Solid concrete takes sleeve or wedge anchors installed with a hammer drill at the specified diameter and depth. Hollow block takes toggles that open inside the void — an expansion anchor in hollow block cracks the shell it is expanding against. Establish which you have by drilling: a hollow block gives itself away as the bit breaks through.
- What about glass or demountable partitions?
- Treat them as non-structural until proven otherwise. Many demountable systems are explicitly not rated for hanging loads, and the answer is usually a floor-standing or freestanding mount, or a fixing back to the structure behind the partition. This is a question for the partition manufacturer, not a judgement to make with a drill in your hand.
